How To Change a Washer

Check with your local authorities (such as council or your water supplier) before undertaking any work on your home water system, as some states insist on authorised plumbers completing this type of work.

Here's how to change a washer

  1. Switch off the water supply line valves under the sink or at the main water valve (the water meter is usually found in the garden).
  2. Turn on the tap to let any water in the pipe out. Put the plug in to catch anything you drop.
  3. Loosen the screw on the top of the handle to remove it. The screw may be covered by a button that you'll need to flip off with a screwdriver - cover it with cloth to prevent scratching it.
  4. Using an adjustable wrench, loosen the packing nut and remove the stem underneath it. You'll see a rubber washer held in place with a screw. Remove the screw and washer and take them to the hardware store to get the same size replacements.
  5. Lubricate the new washer with some plumber's grease, put it back in place and tighten the screw. Reassemble the stem, packing nut, and handle and turn the water back on.

Good as new!
